Montserrat, Spain

Nestled in the mountains about a two hour train ride from Barcelona is the monastic town of Montserrat.
Get there early to beat the crowds and pack a lunch- the food options are abysmal. That said, there’s a lovely farmers market with local cheese and honey, which make nice snacks for the trail.
Hike to Santa Cova Chapel, built around a cave carved into cliff, 1 mile out and back. Next, stop at Creu de Sant Miquel for stunning views of the town rising from the clouds below. Take Funicular de Sant Joan (or hike) up to Capella de Sant Joan for more expansive views of the countryside.
