Sights
Even in the April off-season, most sights were swamped with tourists by mid-morning. Highly recommend getting to any of these spots at first light if you want to enjoy them crowd-free (and get a parking spot).
- Portree - The main town on Skye, and the primary destination for lodging and dining. Also the most crowded and touristy place.
- Old Man of Storr - A short but steep hike, recommended to do it at sunrise, though it ended up being overcast the morning I was there
- Staffin Ecomuseum - not actually a museum, but a collection of natural wonders to see along the Staffin coast
- Quiraing - while many stop for the scenic overlook at the top, I highly recommend the 4.5 mile hike for even more fantastic scenery
- Fairy Glen - a meadow with strange undulating hills
- Sligachan - quick pit stop for a Cuillin beer and a photo of the incredible views
- Fairy Pools - a 2+ mile hike along a crystal clear stream with pools and waterfalls along the way
- Neist Point Lighthouse - beautiful spot for a sunset!
- Dunvegan Castle & Gardens - the Macleod castle, small but a nice place to stop if you like castles
Stay
- Airbnb - I stayed in this Airbnb in Romesdal. It was a beautiful location, cozy, clean and peaceful, while being centrally located.
- Romesdal Highlanders B&B - A bed and breakfast right next door to the Airbnb above.
- Kelpie Cottage - Quaint cottage rental on a wool farm near Neist Point Lighthouse.
- Cottages - Hidden Scotland features some amazing cottage rentals, both traditional and modern, in breath-taking locations. I didn’t stay at any of these, but wish I had!
